Travel During Hurricane Season

The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season (June-November) is starting to be more active than in previous years, with two dynamic weather events already formed in the sea and moved on. This week's weather is full of weather watches and warnings for wind, rain, and tornadoes. Do you know how to manage your travel during the stormy season? Here are a few considerations I'd like to share to help your trip go as smoothly as possible during a storm.

One of the leading causes of death during a storm is storm surge, abnormal rise of water caused by winds. To stay safe after a storm surge:

  1. Obey evacuation orders and stay away from the coast until authorities deem it safe.

  2. Avoid walking or driving in moving water; wait to prepare or drink tap water until notified.

  3. Stay connected to media outlets and family who may be worried about your travels if possible.

Communication is your most excellent tool during a storm. Suppose the weather event comes with a warning; charge devices while the power is still active. In a storm, there is a greater likelihood of losing electrical power. Consider buying battery charger packs not only for weather events but as good travel practice always to have a charge when out.

Stay in touch with your airline or carrier for cancellations and updates as they post these for travel planning purposes. Not only will your transportation carrier provide updates, but you will also be sure to stay in touch with your lodging host. You'll want to be in the know if there is an evacuation. The Red Cross also has a hurricane app for storm updates and other features.

Before even embarking on your journey, it's essential to research or work with a travel advisor like myself to check the seasons for stormy weather in your destination. Be mindful that you may require some flexibility if caught in a storm but don't let hurricane season stop your travel plans. Hotels offer attractive deals during the unpredictable season, and the chances of disruption can be meager statistically.

Lastly, you've heard me talk about this in the past, but travel insurance is the best way to protect your travel investment from the impacts of the stormy season. Travel insurance offers peace of mind and financial protection as the main benefits of getting a plan. Many plans are budget-friendly, and the policy can protect against trip delay or cancellation.
