Money Tips for New Travelers

A trip out of town, on a cruise, or a staycation in your hometown will be hampered if the traveler has money issues during their holiday. These problems are common, but they can foil a trip if you must deal with them while trying to enjoy yourself. Here we offer 7 tips for beginner travelers for easing money issues and keeping the clouds away on your dream vacation.

  1. Cash Money, Cash Money

Stop by a local ATM (cash machine) before heading out on your adventure. You will likely need cash for tips for bag/luggage handlers, dining wait, and housekeeping staff. Also, you may want money for anyone you wish to thank for good service. Cash is also suitable for emergency purchases. On my recent trip to Puerto Rico, the power was out at a store temporarily. Lastly, cash is great for vendors that don't accept plastic (credit/debit cards).

  2. Big Banks

Notify your local bank(s), credit unions, and credit card companies about your upcoming travel. Informing the banks will prevent you from taking time away from your holiday to attend to bank notifications. When traveling abroad, it is also wise to use cards with no foreign transaction fees. Some travelers like to optimize rewards and savings by using travel cards.

  3. Hit me on my mobile phone

Same as above, contact your cell/mobile phone company and let them know your travel plans. You may want to consider buying an international plan of some sort during specific trips. Accidentally uploading photos outside of your network can be a costly mistake.

  4. Travel Insurance

We don't like to spend money on insurance, but it can be a lifesaver when needed. Trip insurance and ensuring your health coverage is adequate can save you hundreds, if not thousands. We used trip insurance on our first Disney Cruise when our luggage went missing for hours into the double digits. We were able to replace the essential contents of our bags and enjoy our trip. Thankfully the luggage showed up at set sail time but had it not, we were covered!

  5. Exchange Rates

Foreign travel may require you to exchange money for local currency. You will want to know the exchange rate. Additionally, if you need to use an ATM internationally, try to stick to bank ATMs; local ones can have very high fees associated with them.

  6. Walk or bus it- Mass Transportation

THE BEST way to enjoy a new place is to travel among the people. So if the area's people take mass transportation, try utilizing the local transport systems. They are typically more affordable than other options. Walking is good for your health, and you might find hidden treasures not otherwise found if you use other transport. Consider using a variety of transportation methods.

  7. Snack Attack

This tip comes curiosity of my husband because I almost forgot to include it. Get your snacks at a local vendor when you arrive or at home before departing. Be careful in tourist areas, as local vendors can still be at tourist prices. The point is to get the M&Ms, chips, carrots, apples, and nuts at regular or discount prices!

  8. Bonus- Explore More

The bonus tip is that I want my readers to embrace travel until their heart is content. Local trips are just as rewarding as those luxurious adventures. If you dream of travel, you are my kind of person. If you need help with the above tips, I CAN help. Our contact information is below.
